ATM Fees in Japan
Japanese Yen (JPY) β’ Updated April 2026
Japan was traditionally cash-heavy but card acceptance has improved significantly. 7-Eleven and Japan Post ATMs are the most reliable for foreign cards. Many small businesses still prefer cash.
Tips for Japan
- β’ 7-Eleven ATMs accept most foreign cards 24/7
- β’ Japan Post ATMs are also reliable
- β’ Cash still preferred at small restaurants and shops
- β’ Physical Suica/Pasmo cards are scarce due to chip shortage - use 'Welcome Suica' (airport only) or add Suica/Pasmo to Apple Wallet (iPhone) before arrival
- β’ Card acceptance improved since 2020
- β’ Google Maps navigation is limited; download Naver Map for walking/navigation in addition to Google Maps for transit
Airport tips
- β’ Major airports have 7-Eleven ATMs
- β’ Get a Welcome Suica card for transport (regular Suica often unavailable)
- β’ Exchange counters have poor rates
Don't forget your home bank fees
The fees shown above are charged by local ATMs. Your home bank may also charge additional fees for international withdrawals (typically 1-3% + a flat fee). Check with your bank before traveling.
