ATM Fees in Australia
Australian Dollar (AUD) β’ Updated April 2026
Australia has eliminated most ATM fees from major banks. Since 2017, the Big Four banks (CommBank, Westpac, NAB, ANZ) don't charge fees for any cardholders. However, independent ATMs still charge $2-3 per transaction. Many places are card-only, especially since COVID.
Tips for Australia
- β’ Big Four bank ATMs (CommBank, Westpac, NAB, ANZ) are free for all cardholders
- β’ Avoid orange Bankwest ATMs and independent ATMs - they charge fees
- β’ Surcharges (1.5%-2%) for card payments are extremely common at cafes and restaurants. Foreign cards generally cannot avoid this.
- β’ Tap-and-go is universal, but often incurs the surcharge. Cash is the only way to strictly avoid these fees.
- β’ Many places are card-only, especially since COVID
Airport tips
- β’ Sydney and Melbourne airports have Big Four bank ATMs
- β’ Opal card (Sydney) and myki (Melbourne) can be topped up by card
- β’ All airport facilities accept cards
- β’ Taxis and Uber accept cards
Don't forget your home bank fees
The fees shown above are charged by local ATMs. Your home bank may also charge additional fees for international withdrawals (typically 1-3% + a flat fee). Check with your bank before traveling.
